Week of 11/3/08

It was another fun filled week in room 16!

Morning Quick Read and Write: This week's quick read focused on finding information in a newspaper article. The quick write focused on contractions, plural nouns, using the correct adjective in a sentence, and finding capitalization errors in writing.

Reading: We began the week with an interesting reading lesson in which we each wrote down the name of the person we would vote for for President if we could. Then we learned about some of the decisions that our nations's president must face and make decisions on. After that we sorted issues that both candidates had ideas about how they should be solved into two columns (I agree with this or I do not agree with this). Finally, we looked at which candidate we most agreed with! Some of us were surprised!!!
National Monuments was our focus for the end of this week. We are in the process of learning about the national monuments by making a cool travel brochure with the information we are collecting.
Friday we had extra computer time to do an Ellis Island Simulation. I have already heard from many parents about how cool the kids thought it was. We learned first hand, what it felt like to be an immigrant coming to the United States! Students, if you have not shared this with your parents, please do.

Math: We have continued to work our way through chapter four which focuses on multiplication and division. We will be taking the chapter 4 assessment later this week.

Spelling: We will have our weekly spelling test on Wednesday!

I hope you are having a wonderful weekend! See you tomorrow!

Week of 10/20/08

Everyone had a great week off and was ready to start learning again on Monday morning!

We began our new unit of study, US History and Government. We are going to be learning about the National Level of Government this week. Specifically we will learn about the 3 branches of government at the National level.

Reading/Social Studies: We began the week with a look at the National Government and how it was created to make sure that no one person had too much power. We learned that there are three branches of government. We used a fun Schoolhouse Rock song to help us remember who was in each branch and what they did! Later on in the week we looked at the Executive Branch. We learned about the president and what his job was. We were quite surprised that he couldn't do WHATEVER he wanted, like make us eat broccoli every day for lunch! We are also learning the song Mighty Presidents. Each night for homework students should be reading different verses to the song.

In computers on Tuesday we looked at fun facts about the white house. Go to the computer blog for 10/21 and find the link to learn more!

To learn more about the presidential race visit
http://teacher.scholastic.com/scholasticnews/indepth/election2008.htm

Here are some questions that you might want to discuss with your child.

There are lots of issues that the presidential candidates talk about. What would you like to see the new president change about our education? Would you like the new president to do anything to change our environment? Could the new president do anything to make our Health Care better? What do you think they should do about the war in Iraq? Talk to your family about these issues.

Next week we are going to be writing about what we would do if we were President of the United States.

We spent a lot of time this week working on our Patriotic Performance that is November 3rd at 7pm. Students are working on memorizing the preamble of the constitution. On Friday they were given their lines for the play. These need to be memorized by Tuesday next week. We will be working on both of these things in class. In addition to the speaking parts we have been working on a bunch of different songs. Students are using the songs to work on fluency and to learn about American Government. We will be using the I'm Just A Bill Song on Monday to sequence the steps it takes for a bill to become a law you can check it out and start learning it if you would like!

We also used the Three Ring Circus song to continue learning about the 3 branches of government.

Friday students learned about election vocabulary. They read through a readers theater on the election process.

BY MONDAY - students should have the preamble to the Constitution memorized. They will be reciting it as a class.

Morning Work:

Quick Read- We are reading about the redwood tree this week. Students are learning about comparisons.
Quick Write-This week we are learning about words with silent e, end marks, proper nouns, and sentences or fragments.

Math: We started chapter 4 this week. This chapter is on multiplication. Here is a sample of the kind of problems we have done so far. There are 4 boxes of pencils and 6 in each box. How many pencils are there all together? Here is a site for computer flash cards if you would like to practice at home.
http://home.indy.rr.com/lrobinson/mathfacts/mathfacts.html

Character Counts: Mrs. Jones came to visit our class on Monday. We learned all about Trust. Ask you child about the blind fold game that we played! Also, we talked about different people that we do trust and people who need to earn our trust.

Report cards came home on Friday. Second quarter grades will be on-line soon!

First Quarter Comes To An End

It is hard for me to believe that the first quarter is over!

As I look back at where we were at the beginning of the year to now, I am pleased and proud. This group of students has come so far in nine short weeks! They came in as second graders and are now TERRIFIC THIRD graders. We have learned so much....not only about academics, but also about working in a group, doing our best work, and working to our potential!

I would like to thank every child in the class for giving their all every single time they walk through our classroom doors. I would also like to thank every one of their parents, your daily support of your children is appreciated more than words can express. Our class is a success because of all you do at home and in the classroom!

Have a wonderful week. Enjoy this time with your precious children (I know I will!).

I will see you in a week.

When we return we will begin studying government!

Feel free to post this week if you would like and I will respond to you.

Oh yeah, my hands look like I am turning into a Smurf from rinsing out the Tie Dye shirts! Parents...you might need to explain what a Smurf is!!!!!

Week of 9/22/08

WOW! What a week!

Thanks to all of you who attended conferences this week. It was great seeing you all and being able to discuss your child's progress with you.

Here is a recap of our week;

Morning Read and Write:

Read 4 Today: This week we learned about the suffix "less" We learned that it means without. We also worked on using context clues to help us understand vocabulary in a passage, identifying the setting and problem in a passage, and the long "i" sound of igh! We also learned about quotation marks and when to use them!

Write 4 Today:

Write 4 Today concentrated words that are capitalized in an address. We studied many addresses and identified what needed to be capitalized in each one. We also learned about past-tense verbs. We used the correct past-tense verb in sentences. An example of this would be; One green frog ____ (saw, see, seen) the big bugs on the other side.

Reading and Social Studies: We continued our study of Explorers. We read a recipe for hard tack and learned what it was. We also completed activities that we had begun the week before with the other explorers.

Math: We completed chapter 2 this week and took the chapter assessment today. The class did well as a whole. Students were asked to complete the addition and subtraction problems on this test using the partial-sums and trade first algorithms. It is necessary for them to become proficient at these algorithms in order to understand future ones. From now on, unless the directions state that a specific algorithm must be used, they can choose a method that they like best to solve the problems. If you are still a little confused about these algorithms, visit these video presentations to help you out!

There was an open response question on this test like the one that was on chapter 1 assessment. Here it is if you would like to try it out as a family!

A Brithday Dinner!

Mr. Brown is cooking an 18-pound turkey for Keron's birthday dinner.
The turkey must bake about 15 minutes for every pound.
For how long does the turkey need to bake? ____hours and _____minutes.
At what time should the turkey go into the oven for dinner to be ready at 5:00 pm?

We will begin chapter 3 on Monday.

The week was short due to conferences, but we still got a lot done! Have a great weekend and I will see you on Monday.

Week of 9/15/08

This has been an awesome, but crazy week!

I am looking forward to seeing all of you next week at conferences (parents and kids!). If you don't remember your day or time please drop me an email.

Here is what we did this week...

Quick read : This week we read about Ice Fishing. We learned what ice fishing was and how they do it. It was fun to learn about something that most of us have never done before!

Writing: This week everyone made a spider map about what a teacher does. The students wrote a rough draft, edited their papers and wrote final copies. I am looking forward to reading them this weekend. We began writing a letter to Christopher Columbus and we learned all about the parts to a letter.
Want to write a letter online? Visit readwritethink.org/materials/letter_generator/ . It will walk you through all the parts of a letter.

Spelling: New words came home on Thursday. Visit www.spellingcity.com to type in your words and practice.

Reading and Social Studies: We have jumped right into learning about explorers. Monday we read about Christopher Columbus. We learned about where he landed .and where he thought he was. We also learned what he called the people that lived there and why! Then on Wednesday we read about Vasco De Gama. He was trying to reach the same place as Columbus but he tried a different way. On Thursday we read about John Cabot. AGAIN, he was trying to get to the same place as Columbus and De Gama but he tried a 3rd way. All of these men where trying to reach the same place. WE had a lot of fun learning about these three explorers. The students did a great job! Want to learn about more about explorers?
Visit f.factmonster.com/biography/explorers.html

Math: This week was not an easy week of math but I KNOW that everyone is getting better at partial sums addition. We looked at rule boxes and reviewed fact triangles on Monday. Tuesday and Wednesday we read different story problems and tried to organize our information into part-part-total boxes. Then on Thursday we learned about partial sums addition. It is a little different the the "Old Fashion Carrying" addition but it really helps kids understand why they are carrying numbers. On Friday we spent over an hour practicing the partial sums addition. I think the kids are really getting it.
Need some help with partial sums algorithm?Visit http://www.swsd.k12.pa.us/baresvle/MathMaterials/powerpoints/partial_sums.pps#256,1,Partial Sums . This power point will walk you through the whole process.

Grades have been updated online and student work will be given out at conferences. See you all on Monday and have a great rest of the weekend!

Computer Lab 9/16/08

The Internet can be a wonderful place for kids. We can use it to research school reports, talk with teachers and other kids, and play games.

Any child who is old enough to punch in a few letters on the keyboard can access the world. That is why Internet safety is very important. We need to know that there are some important rules or dos and don'ts that must be followed to keep us safe online.
First let's watch this video

http://www.ikeepsafe.org/assets/videos/?vid=fauxpaw_video

Next, let's watch and read this fun comic

Class News for the week of 9/8/08

We had another great week! This quarter is going by so quickly, I can hardly believe that we are beginning our second unit! On Thursday, we began our unit in Explorers. We will be studying different explorers that impacted the world until fall break!

Here is how our week went:

Read 4 Today and Write 4 Today: Our Read 4 Today was about ghost towns. We learned new vocabulary that went along with the passage. We also learned that ghost towns are in the present, but we can learn about the past when we visit or study them! Write 4 Today focused on how to capitalize the title of books and songs. We also looked at verbs and helping verbs as well as commas in a series. We also reviewed the homophones your and you're.

Spelling: We will have our spelling test on Wednesday! Keep practicing your words. Don't forget to visit Spelling City. The link is on the left of this blog!

Reading: In reading, we finished up our desert unit with a fun Reader's Theater about a coyote who learned a lesson the hard way! We also read another story about a sneaky desert animal.

Writing: In writing we wrote the ending to a story that we read in reading. The students read The Rattle Snake and the Mouse and wrote their own original ending.

Math: We started chapter 2 in math. We reviewed fact triangles and fact families. We are working on mastering our basic facts and using those facts to help us with harder problems. For example: we know 3+5=8 then we can do 3+25..... by adding 20 more to our original answer. This concept really helps when we begin to try and do mental math or math in our heads.

Unit Study: We finished up our desert unit with creating a fun book called A Walk in the Desert. The students were able to write what they knew and liked about the desert as well as illustrate them. We also began our Explorers unit. We set up scrapbook that the students will be making over the next 4 weeks and saw all of the cool explorers that we will be learning about!

Explorers will encompass all of reading, writing, and unit study for the next four weeks! It is guaranteed to be an exciting unit!

Kids, please leave a comment on the blog and be sure to answer the questions with your parents. I know that they love hearing about what we did in class!

Parents, you are welcome to comment as well!

Have a great rest of the weekend and I will see you in the morning!

Class News for the week of 9/2/08

Even tho it was a short week, we were still able to fit in lots of fun and learning!

Read and Write 4 Today: Throughout the week, we read Cherry Blossom festival. It was interesting to learn about celebrations in other countries. On Friday, we read about the Midsummer Magic Festival in Norway. The students took a reading test that assessed their comprehension of the passage. They did very well! I am impressed! We also wrote a paragraph about our favorite food. The students planned their writing, did a pre-write, and edited their writing throughout the week. On Friday, they wrote their final draft. They were expected to have a topic sentence, 4-6 supporting sentences, and a concluding sentence. This was easy for most of the class because we have been working super hard on it for a couple of weeks!

Writing: On Tuesday we wrote a bio poem. The students used prompts to write a poem about themselves. We are going to edit them and then they will type them in the computer lab. I am planning on displaying them in the classroom!

Reading: We read The Mighty Saguaro all week. Students learned new vocabulary. They even learned new information about the desert! They were surprised that there was anything that they didn't already know! They also answered comprehension questions about each chapter. We worked real hard on writing in COMPLETE SENTENCES that included a capital letter at the beginning, punctuation at the end, and part of the question! We are getting better at this!

Spelling: New words came home on Thursday. The test will be on Wednesday Sept. 10th. Every student in the class has their own list. The list consists of any words they missed on last week's test, words they missed from the pretest of words they need to know by the end of third grade, and words that I have taken out of their writing that they have misspelled. It is important that the word lists are not removed from the planners. I do not keep a copy at school. Feel free to make yourself a copy for home if you would like! Don't forget to visit Spelling City. The link is on the right side of our blog page. Type your spelling words into this site and play games with them!

Math: We finished chapter 1 this week and the students took a the end of the chapter assessment on Friday. Everyone did awesome! They also were given a self reflection to complete AND... they were asked to try and complete a written response question. This question was a challenge but CONGRATS!!!! to Taylor and Aaron for solving the problem. Great job you two! Here is the problem in case anyone wants to try it at home:

Imad collects quarters, dimes, nickels, and pennies. This morning, he took $1.80 from his collection. He counted the coins and found that he had twice as many nickels as dimes. What coins could Imad have?

Science: The Circle of Life! We have been learning about the life cycle of two plants, one the cactus and two the bean. Next week we will look more in depth into the bean plants life.

Don't forget to check your grades online! I will update them on Tuesday.

This year is off to such a great start and I am really enjoying this group of kiddos. They are such hard workers and we are having a lot of fun together. Thanks for all of your support at home!

In your child's homework folders is a note with the day and time of teacher conferences. Conferences are the week of September 22. September 23-26 are 1/2 days which means all of those days will be like Tuesdays schedule.

Have a wonderful rest of the weekend and please drop me an email if you have any questions.

Also, if you get a chance please leave a comment on the blog about how I could improve this blog or if you find it useful. Thanks!

Week of 8/29/08

We had another great week filled with lots and lots of fun!

Morning Work: In the Write 4 Today assignments this week we worked on capitalizing proper nouns, adding correct punctuation to the end of sentences, and most important using their, there, and they're correctly! In the Read 4 Today assignments we read the story The Foolish Coyote. This was a story about a coyote wanting to be the king of all coyotes that he chose to foolishly let the blackbirds trick him into thinking he could fly.

Reading: We spent this week reading the story The Fruit and Vegetable Man. On Tuesday, the students read the story and came up with questions they had about the story and its pictures. We were able to answer many of the questions as we continued to read, but some, we just had to guess at the answers. On Friday, we discussed all of the parts of the story and took an assessment on the characters, setting, problem, events and ending of the story.

Math: We are almost at the end of chapter 1! I am planning the end of the unit test this Friday! This week we worked on name boxes. We came up with many different names for numbers. One example of this would be the number 25 could be shown as tally marks, as the math problem 20+5 or even as a quarter. This gets the students thinking about different ways to show a number. We also found differences in numbers. This was quite challenging for many of us. We looked at numbers and has to decide what we need to do to change it to a given number. For example... how would you change 54 to 74? You would need to add 20! We also worked on our calculators and learned how to skip forward and backward. Last, but certainly not lease, we worked on place value and money skills. Don't forget to try and use the money skills we practiced in class when you are at the store.

Spelling: Students were given a new list on Thursday. The list consists of the words they missed on last weeks test, any words they missed from this week's pretest, and words that they are missing in their writing. The next test will be Wednesday!

Science: This week the students finished their cactus life cycle books. They turned out so beautiful! Unfortunately, our bean seeds grew mold so we were unable to plant them. Next week we will get to learn what would have happened to them if we had planted them!

Parents,
As you can see we had a very busy week! Thanks so much for allowing me to spend time with your wonderful children! Also, thanks for all that you do at home to help me out!

Week of 8/11/08

Another great week for everyone!

Grades are currently online and all graded assignments came home on Friday. Grades that are below a 70% can be corrected and turned in for a grade adjustment!

Here is what we were up to this week.

Reading/Writing: We started foo the week with a graphic organizer that the students listed everything that the knew about the desert. They listed the animals, plants, insects, dangers, good points, and climate that they already knew about in the desert. Then we looked through Arizona Highway Magazines and cut out pictures of these things. We created a picture graphic organizer that is hanging in our classroom!
We also read the Cactus Hotel. This book goes through the life cycle of a cactus. It also talks about how important Saguaro cactus are to all the animals that live in the desert. They make their homes in living and dead cactus. Student drew a beautiful picture of the desert and use descriptive words to describe their desert scene. We also worked on some comprehension questions.
Our cookie writing is still going on. We will be editing paragraphs next week on 3 different types of cookies that we have tried.

Math: We are continuing with chapter 1. We are reviewing place value, number grids, tally charts, time, money, and looking through our tool boxes and Student Reference Books. We also learned to gather information using a Tally Chart and display it using a bar graph.

Science: This week we talked about what a plant needs to grow. We also decided to see if a plant could grow without soil. Students put 4 different kinds of seed into a dish. They soaked them in water for just a minute and poured the water out. Then they sat the seeds over night. Today when the observed them they noticed 3 big differences. We are going to continue watching them and do another project with them next week.

Spelling: Students received a new spelling list. The list consisted of any words that they missed on this week's test, and words that each child is misspelling in their every day wrtiting.

Morning Work: Each morning students are completing 2 assignments:
Read 4 Today and Write 4 Today. The reading assignment has a short 2 to 3 sentence paragraph and 4 questions to answer about it. The writing assignment either has 4 questions about writing and grammar or over the course of a week the student is asked to organize, write, revise, edit and publish a very short story. On Friday the students were assessed on both of these. Graded tests will come home on Monday.

Week of 8/11/08

We had a great week in room 16! It was filled with tons of fun, hands-on learning.

Every day we started off with Reading and Writing 4 Today. These activities practice skills Monday-Thursday and then on Friday the skills are tested. I am happy to report that our class did tremendously well on both of the tests!! Way to go 3rd graders!

In writing this week, we continued with our chocolate chip cookie writing. We have tasted and written about Bakery Fresh Cookies as well as store bought cookies. We are using descriptive words to help our reader be able to make a "mental movie" of our experience. I wonder what type of cookie will be next?? We will continue this lesson next week! We have also started writing in our writing journals every day!

In reading this week, we read read several different versions of The Three Little Pigs. With each of these we compared and contrasted the diferent elements of the story. The setting, characters, villans, what all of the houses were built out of, etc. We also spent time discusssing bullying, this fit in well with the Three Little Pigs story, because we all know that the Big Bad Pig is the ultimate bully! We learned that there were two types of bullying and what we should so if we are bullied.

Math was busy this week as well! We started the week learning about number grids. The students were introduced to number grids last year, but we took them to a new level with larger numbers. We also tried our hands at some number grid puzzles. They were challenging, but fun. We also learned to use our Student Reference Book (SRB). This is new to third graders. We will use it often this year to help us with our math lessons. It is also a great help to parents if they need help understanding the math lesson. Students are welcome to take them home every eveving, but they will need to be returned to school every morning!

In unit study, we did two fun hands-on activities. The first was a bean pod observation. We learned what a property was and used our new knowledge to describe the bean pod. We also learned that seeds come from FRUIT. Hmmm, then why do we call cucumbers and tomatoes vegetables? Ask your child and they will be able to tell you!!! We ended the week with a fruit dissection activity. It was messy, but fun and full of learning! The students dissected many different fruits, counted the seeds, and then listed the properties of each seed. When they were finished, they sorted the seeds by common properties (size, shape, texture)

As you can see, we had a great week! As we were leaving on Friday, one of the students said, "Wow, its already time to go home?" That was music to my ears! I know that they were engaged and learning and forgot about the time!!!

Don't forget to post a blog, vote in the poll, and have a GREAT weekend!!

August 8, 2008

The first two days of school were a huge success!
On Thursday, which was the first day of school, we had lots of fun. We started off the morning taking a tour of the school. We found the restrooms, the teachers lounge, the office, the nurse, the police officers office, the music room, the lunch room, the P.E. room, the art room, the playground, where to line up AND our own classroom. When we finished the school tour, we took a tour around our own classroom.
Then, it was time for our first visit with Mrs. Marcy, the music teacher. We had a great time with her.
When we got back from music it was time to do a little writing! The class learned a little about their new teacher, Mrs. Sheber. I told the class all about me and my family. After learning about me, everyone in class wrote a letter to me so I could learn about all the students in our class. We even used the correct format for letter writing, heading, greeting, body, closing, signature. Finally, after a very busy morning, it was time for lunch and lunch recess.
After lunch, we read the first story in our our reading books. We played a fun word game called RIVET and then read a story called Miss Nelson is Missing. As we read this story we talked about how the students in the story were behaving and how we should not act like them. At the end of the day we learned how to fill outour assignment books and got our first bit of homework! . It was a great day!!!

Our second day of school was filled with lots of learning.
We started the day off learning more about Mrs. Sheber by reading a short autobiography about her and answering some comprehension questions about it. Then we learned what makes each member of our class special. We wrote a sentence about what makes each of us special and drew a picture of ourselves.
After a little bit of morning work, the students got to meet Mrs. Paulson the PE teacher.
In math today we used our homework from last night to make a math project. The homework required us to find numbers that describe ourselves. We then took the information and made a math number quilt. Mrs. Sheber is going to make this into a class book so we can enjoy it for the whole year!
We began our science unit today. For the next few weeks we will be learning about plants. The activity we did today required the students to:-estimate how many seeds were in a cup.-sort the seeds into types-count the seeds-add together all the individual seed counts to find the total number of seeds-describe the properties of the seeds (color and shape)-estimate how many seeds would be needed to make a 6 inch line-line the seed up to make a 6 inch line-estimate how many seeds would weigh the same amount as a little bear-use a balance scale to weigh the seeds and the bear
This was a fun project that required the students to work in groups of 4 to 6 kids.
If you on the left side of the my bolg, you will see a spot that says "QUESTIONS??".
To earn five Sheber Shillings next week at school, click on the work comments right below this blog and answer one of the questions from the blue section.
See you all Monday!!

Newsletter 5/09/08

Wow! This was a busy week!
We practiced and practiced and performed or class play! The kids did a wonderful job on the play, I am so proud of them. The Sidewinders game was a blast!
In reading we began reading a some fun Gerinimo Stilton adventures. Each environment group is reading about an adventure that takes place within the environment they are studying. The groups are having fun reading, writing, and drawing about the adventure that Gerinimo is going on!
In math we learned another way to multiply. Earlier in the unit we learned partial products multiplication, and this week we added lattice multiplication to our list of ways to multiply! Learning different methods of multiplication helps students find a way that they understand the best! We also worked on parts of a whole!
In science, we are continuing our environment study! I am still in need of help for painting on Wednesday!
Keep practicing those math facts!
Have a great weekend! See you all at the Spring Fling!!!!

Class News - May 3, 2008

We have had a very busy week.

We started the week off with more recorder song pass offs in music. Many of the students are doing well but they all need to practice more so they can earn all their belts by the end of the year. Also, they will have a recorder concert on May 19th at 9:40 so they need to be ready for that.

Wednesday was a great day. The symphony was so much fun. They played some of my favorite songs. They played a really happy song, a sad song (Jupiter from The Planets), a scary song, a heroic song (Star Wars), and a silly song (Mambo from West Side Story). The conductor taught the kids about dynamics, tempo, and orchestration. Our students were the best audience. They remembered not to clap until the conductors hands dropped to his side. Lunch was also a highlight. We walked over to the Hotel Arizona to eat. They served us hot dogs, macaroni nuggets, watermelon, AND ice cream sundaes with chocolate syrup and sprinkles. They gave us a great deal and were so nice to all the kids. Thank you to Gail, Valerie, Kevin, Chef Todd and all the servers for taking such great care of us.

In reading this week we worked on our Artful Dodgers play. Students practiced their fluency skills during the songs. They also practiced using lots of expression in their lines AND in their facial expressions and reactions to the other actors. Everyone is very excited to perform the play next week.

In science we continued working on our environments projects. Student researched more consumers, producers and decomposers. They looked for adaptations that these producers and consumers had to have in order to live in their environment. Our water experiment plants are growing well. It seems that the dry soil has no plants in it and the very wet plants are growing... very well.

In math, we are continuing our practice with multiplicationa and division.

Now time for extra credit... Students, post a comment to this blog answering one of the questions to the side and telling me what you voted for in the poll AND why and you will get a prize from the prize basket.

Have a wonderful weekend. I am looking forward to Wednesday and the baseball game.

Class News 4/25/08

We had a great week filled with lots of learning and fun!

In reading we continued reading Sarah Plain and Tall. While reading this story the students answered comprehension questions, made predictions, and sequenced events from the story. We also did a review of synonyms and antonyms. In spelling we are currently working on unit 26. The Unit 26 test will be on April 30th.

In math we are continuing our work with multiplication, division, fractions, and factors. The students played a fun game called Factor Bingo. The better they knew their multiplication facts, the better they did in the game! Don't forget to keep practicing the math facts every day!

In science we are continuing our study of environments. The students researched living and non-living things within their environments. We also learned about producers and consumers and they began investigating these as well. The plants in our terraniums are growing well. We are experimenting to see how different factors affect the plant growth. Each table group planted several seeds (pea, corn, radish, and barley)in four different soil types (dry, moist, wet, and very wet) they predicted which seed they thought would grow best in which environment. We are anxiously waiting to see if their hypothesis' were correct!

We are having a blast working on the Artful Dodgers play! We will be assigning parts on Monday and the students will need to memorize their lines by Friday. Please assist them in learning the words to the songs. If you have not turned in your order form for tickets to the baseball game, please send it in on Monday.

We will be going on our Tucson Symphony Orchestra field trip on Wednesday. We have arranged to have a forma, sit down lunch at the Arizona Inn following the concert. This is a wonderful treat and will be free to the students! We used Tax Credit money to pay for the concert and Nature Shop proceeds to pay for the lunch! If you signed up to attend the trip as a chaperone, you will need to pay $10.00 for the concert and lunch. Please let me know either by email or through the blog if you are planning to attend!

Have a great weekend. Don't forget to have your child post on the blog for 10 extra credit points!

Newsletter 4/18/08

We had another busy week! It was fun getting back into our regular routine after AIMS testing.
In reading we began a wonderful fiction chapter book called Sarah Plain and Tall. This book compliments our environment unit because it compares the prairie and ocean environments! While reading this book, we answered comprehension questions, made predictions, compared the environments, and worked on base (root words).

We will be having the spelling test on Wednesday, so don't forget to study!
In math we are continuing our unit on multiplication and division. We are learning to use what we already know to answer more difficult problems. We are continuing to work on our math fact time tests every day!

We have been working hard on our cursive handwriting so we will be ready for fourth grade!

In science we created environments in terraniums. We planted different seeds and each table group got to choose "how" they planted the seeds. They were able to choose how they would plant the seeds and how much water they would give them. We are now watching to see if they made good choices! Each student was also able to choose an environment that they would become an "expert" on. We began learned that every environment has living and non-living things in it. Students then researched the living and non-living things in their environment.
I sent home a letter asking for help from home with the environment projects that we will be creating in class. Please let me know if you can help out. I have attached it below in case you have not read it yet!
Have a great weekend!

Environment Project Letter

On Monday we began a new science unit about environments. The term environment is defined as the objects, organisms, and conditions that influence an organism. We will be investigating the environmental factors which make up different areas on the Earth.

Over the next five weeks we will grow plants in terrarium environment and experiment with different environmental factors. As a class, we will brainstorm environmental factors that are present in different environments such as plants and animals.

In small groups, students will work together to become an expert on one environment. They will read books, observe pictures, and collect facts about a certain environment. Each group will be compiling information on: water, human effects, living and nonliving factors, consumers, decomposers, producers, and micro and macro organisms in their environment.

During the week of May 12th the small groups will use a large refrigerator box to create a 3-dimenstional display of their environment. As you can see, this is going to be a GREAT undertaking. We are going to need your help. At home students will need your help in collecting many items for their environment display.

Here is a list of items that students need to collect for their display:
-Books
-Pictures
-Magazines with pictures to cut out
-Photos
-Calendar page pictures
-Stuffed animals that would be in their environment
-Fabrics or craft supplies to make things for their environment
-Notes from the internet about their environment
-Anything that they think might be helpful in their environment display
-Notes from books or people about their environment-
Tempera Paint for the background

Help will also be needed in the classroom when students are putting their environments together. We will need at least 5 parents on each of these days and times.

Monday 1:00 – 3:00
Tuesday 10:00 – 11:30
Wednesday 1:00 – 3:00
Thursday 1:00 – 3:00
Friday 1:00 – 3:00

This learning experience has the opportunity of being unforgettable. Without help from all of you it will be very difficult to pull off! Please let us know which days you are available to help.

Thank you,
Mrs. Roberts, Mrs. Sheber, and Miss Tracy

April 11th Newsletter

AIMS is over! I think that the kids are happy. It was a lot of time sitting in their seats that they are not used to. In spite of all the time we spent on AIMS, we were able to fit in a few other things!

We finished up our maps and globes unit today. The kids completed their centers on the globe, the continents, coordinantes, map key, landforms, water ways and the compass. Today they worked on creating their own map of a make-believe island. They did an incredible job on these projects!

This week we also began to work on our end of the year class play. I think everyone is really excited. The play performance will be on May 7th, Wednesday. There is a Sidewinders baseball game that night that I will be buying group tickets to. I will send a paper note home about this next week, but keep this date open... it will be a fun night.

Last week's poll was, "What was your favorite Social Studies Unit?" Only six people voted and there was a tie between Civil War and Government, each had 3 votes. Hopefully more kids will vote this week! If you voted for Civil War or Greece and Rome, you can earn 10 extra credit points in social studies by commenting and telling me WHY it was your favorite.

Don't forget to vote on this week's poll. I will give extra credit for everyone who posts a comment on this blog. Here are the requirements: post a comment, answer a question from the "Questions from the Week" section, vote on the poll and tell me what you voted on. That is all you have to do and you get a FREE 10 points in Science!

I will respond to each post that is made this week!

April 4th

Hey everyone! It is almost AIMS. As you know we are testing on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday. Make sure to get lots of rest and eat a good breakfast next week. If you have any questions or concerns about the test please drop me an email or blog comment. Thank you for all the snacks. If you still want to send in snack please do on Monday. The kids will appreciate it.

The last 2 weeks we have been learning about maps and globes. Students made a compass, learned the continents and oceans, read coordinates and used a map scale. They used an Arizona map to find coordinates and distances. The last few days of this week the students practiced their learning in small group centers. Next week students are going to be finishing up their centers and making an island map on their own.

In reading and writing, students have been working on a demonstration lesson. Students have been looking at various recipes and seeing what makes a good recipe. Friday, students will be presenting their lessons to the class.

In math we have been doing lots of practice for the AIMS. This week we finished Chapter 8 on Fractions. The students took their test on Thursday. We will start Chapter 9 on multiplication after the AIMS test is over.

Here are some questions to ask your kids about what we learning this week.
What is the equator?
What is a hemisphere?
What are transition words?
How did your presentation go on Friday?

If you and your child post to this blog I will give your child 5 pts extra credit in writing! :) Just click on the comments below.
